Battlefields Tour

Verdun is synonymous with the bloodiest battle of the Great War in which approximately 500,000 men died in a year of non-stop fighting.

The Germans had intended to strike a blow to French morale by attacking the forts of Douaumont and Vaux (which had been  built to stave off attack after the humiliating defeat in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870).

The result was total devastation with nine villages being totally wiped out.  Even today the unrestored land still follows the curves of the shell craters. To divert the German’s resources
away and to save the French army from destruction the British launched the fateful Battle of the Somme in July 1916.

On our trip to Verdun we will include visits to both the forts, the trenches, the Ossuary of Bones at Douaumont, the Verdun Memorial in the heart of the well preserved Battlefield, the Sacred Road, the Bayonet Trench and also the World Peace Centre.

On day one we’ll have breakfast on the ferry and take a relaxed ride the 200 mls to our hotel in Chalons-de-Champagne. We’ll spend two days investigating the battlefields and ride home on day four.  Dinner may be taken locally or we might take a short trip into Reims for the evenings.

This will not be a trip to glorify violence and killing but to try and understand how a war can happen, to remember the suffering and those who died, to regret their passing but to understand and be proud of their achievements
Cost will be about; Ferry £40, Verdun Entry Pass €30, Hotel €60pn, plus fuel, food, tolls etc
